60-letnica konvencije proti diskriminaciji v izobraževanju

3. december 2020

December 14, 2020 marks the celebration of 60 years of the adoption of the UNESCO Convention against Discrimination in Education, the only international legally-binding instrument that covers the right to education extensively.

UNESCO is organizing a campaign from 10 to 14 December 2020 to renew the recognition of this Convention as a cornerstone of the Education 2030 Agenda and a powerful tool to advance SDG4.

As part of the campaign, we would like to invite ASPnet students to make and share video stories of discrimination that they have faced personally or of someone they know who has been a victim of prejudice or of any incident they have witnessed or heard about in their community.

Discrimination is a violation of human rights and negatively affects equality of treatment in education. As defined by the Convention discrimination includes any distinction, exclusion, limitation or preference based on ethnicity, colour, age, gender, language, religion, disability, political or other opinion, national or social origin, economic condition or birth, etc.

Eliminating discrimination and inequalities remain major challenges facing States and the international community today, a fact acknowledged by the international community's pledge to  ‘leave no one behind’.

Discrimination is seen most obviously in terms of accessing education, but it can also occur within education systems (for instance, the quality of education in urban schools tends to be higher than that found in rural areas). Discrimination also occurs after education where different groups of people are not able to draw the same benefits from their schooling (for instance, educated boys tend to leave school with higher wage potential than girls with equivalent education).

The video stories, which must be submitted before 4 December 2020, will be promoted and published through UNESCO’s communication channels as well as shared through the ASPnet community worldwide to foster equal rights, non-discrimination in education and build a resilient and inclusive societies.

Ready, set, go! How to make a successful video!
