Teachers, youth and education leaders call for concrete steps to ensure transformative education for all

Education which equips every learner with the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes to care for each other and the planet and act for the future was at the centre of the 5th UNESCO Forum on transformative education for sustainable development, global citizenship, health and well-being.

From 29 November to 1 December 2021, UNESCO and APCEIU convened over 1600 experts and practitioners in the virtual Forum hosted by the Ministries of Education and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea.

First-ever climate-neutral UNESCO World Conference on ESD

The first digital UNESCO World Conference for ESD held in May 2021 as a virtual conference from Berlin was also the first climate-neutral digital conference of its size. CO² emissions were offset by supporting international climate protection projects that contribute to the United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In order to organize the digital conference in a climate-friendly way, the carbon footprint was calculated based on the internationally recognized standard 'The GHG Protocol: A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard'. It includes all climate-relevant greenhouse gases that fall under the 'operational control' of the event organizer and is based on ecoinvent 2.2 and the IPCC 2007 assessment method (GWP 100a). The World Conference recorded low overall greenhouse gas emissions per guest (0.02 t CO2e).

Trash clogs our oceans, fills our streets, and litters huge areas of the planet. If we continue to live the way we do now, the equivalent of almost three planets would be needed by 2050 to provide natural resources.

UNESCO launched the Trash Hack global campaign in September 2020 to encourage young people to find innovative ways to act towards sustainable development. Listen to the voices of Tsolmon and Namuun, two young women motivated to make a difference in the fight against waste in Mongolia.

Teachers Have Their Say

UNESCO and Education International conducted a global survey of 58,000 teachers, finding that although 81% of teachers were interested in learning more about Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship, training opportunities were not always available and half of the respondents face challenges in teaching these themes, typically because they are not familiar with suitable pedagogies.
